Images of the house and surrounding area

This beautiful 200 year-old barn and house has been lovingly restored and tastefully furnished throughout. It is situated part-way up a mountain in the south-west corner of the Haute Alpes (05) region of France – 600 miles south of Calais and approximately 2 hours north of Marseille – a beautifully unspoilt area where the Haute Provence mountains begin to merge with the southern Alps – an area boasting of 300 days sunshine a year. You will find yourselves refreshed by the clean mountain air (altitude 1100m) - reputedly the best altitude for the body, and virtually no traffic noise except for the occasional farm vehicle and neighbouring car passing by.

The huge sitting/dining room is a grand and spacious place to spread out in. For smaller groups and families come and enjoy the freedom that this room provides, for larger bookings you will still feel comfortable with up to 8. Our absolute maximum is 12. The house will sleep up to 7 in 2 double-bedded rooms and one triple (singles). 2 double sofa-beds and the main sofa provide extra sleeping space for an additional 5 making a maximum of 12, but please note there is not wardrobe space for these extras. There are two new bathrooms – one on the first floor and one on the ground floor. A spacious kitchen has all facilities, and the whole house is generously heated with a large woodburning stove and new electric radiators. Opening out from the kitchen is a sizeable ‘terrasse’ for ‘al fresco’ dining, with the nearby hills, forests and Alps as a backdrop.

The nearest town - Veynes, with all everyday shopping facilities is 20 mins away, the nearest ski resort - La Jarjatte is 30 mins away, swimming and horse-riding 25 mins away. Places of cultural and historical interest – Grenoble, Sisteron and Gap are all about an hour away. The stunning scenery of alpine peaks and valleys, provencale gorges and rivers surround you; footpaths and cycle tracks pass the house.

To explore by car there are circuitous routes taking in the delights of the spectacular Vercors region, or the rocky mountain passes and deep gorges of the Devoluy and the Ecrins. The ‘Grandes Alpes’ and glaciers are to be found further north; vineyards, orchards and lavender fields to the south and west.

Prices are from £375 per week depending on season. There is a supplementary charge for bookings of more than 7 people. Please see "prices" page for details and contact email.

The house is detached, one of four at the far end of a tiny hamlet, with French residents to either side. A travel cot is available for a baby. We do not recommend the house for families with inquisitive toddlers due to stairs inside and steps outside. Similarly, the house is not equipped for wheel-chair users.

There is parking for 2 or 3 small cars round the back of the house, and 1 larger car to the front of the barn. In winter it is recommended to park lower down the lane, due to sudden falls of snow and/or build-up of ice. Snow tyres and/or snow chains are highly advisable.
